Innovation is the motivating power behind scientific and technological evolution. People make use of innovation to improve their lifestyles and quality of life.
In 2001, Lite-On Technology Corporation launched the first annual Lite-On Awards. Over the next five years, the Awards triggered a great deal of excitement in the hearts of thousands of young designers as it became known around the world. With the idea that design is the art for mass production, the 2006 Lite-On Awards branched out in a new direction by establishing a separate contest: the Lite-On Judges Panel Special Awards. For this new contest, a separate panel of judges was formed and the division chiefs of Lite-On Technology Corporation were named panel members.
The Lite-On Judges Panel Special Awards has its own panel of judges and is independent from the Lite-On Awards. Guided by the principle of practical innovation, no inspired idea is turned aside. The Lite-On Judges Panel Special Awards examines ideas closely and judges them on the criteria of mass production feasibility, marketability, and impact on the industry. Designs suited to mass production and the talent capable of producing such designs are selected and explored. To do this effectively, the Lite-On Technology Corporation has placed its division chiefs and other senior executives on the panel of judges. The judges have a wide range of expertise and strength in special fields, including engineering, research and development, industrial design, marketing and management.
Panel judges rely on the following criteria to select winners: technical feasibility 40%; innovation 30%; and design 30%. Although technical feasibility has greater weight than in the Lite-On Awards, it is still less than the combined 60% of innovation and design. While stressing technical feasibility, the awards still place a high value on innovation and design.
Preliminary judging considers all entries submitted by contestants and marks each with a grade. The ten designs that receive the highest grades are selected and presented on the Lite-On Awards website for the evaluation of all eligible voters: namely, Lite-On employees. The Lite-On voters choose three top designs by popularity. These three and seven other winners chosen by the judges panel each receives a certificate plus a prize of NT$10,000 in either cash or gifts of equivalent value.
Lite-On is a top name among ODM enterprises and it is acclaimed by world class clients. In 2005 and 2006, Lite-On was honored to receive several internationally renowned design prizes, including the iF Award of Germany, the Red Dot of Germany and IDEA of the United States. Winners from Lite-On Technology Corporation included a digital TV receiver and a DVB-T tuner both of which received recognition from around the world. Lite-On’s winning designs were cited in the book “Profitable Growth Is Everybody’s Business” as an excellent example of turning innovation into sales growth.
The Lite-On Judges Panel Special Awards was established to stimulate the imagination of young designers and to uncover new trends. The awards also seek to discover practical new products and technologies to improve the quality of life. An inspiration of the moment might just grow into a large enterprise or even an entire industry, eventually contributing to the good of society and to national economic development.
